All Souls Trilogy review

In a book series that is very True Blood meets Practical Magic, Deborah Harkness has made an outstanding start to the forthcoming series known as the All Souls Trilogy with her current book, A Discovery of Witches.

The name of the first book is awful, I know. It’s not a young adult book, although the title makes it seem like it is. Send in your teenage cousin to pick it up from your local bookstore for you if you must, but definitely get started on this series quickly. The next book, Shadow of Night is due to come out on July 10, 2012, and IMDB mentions that a movie is in the works.

If you want to follow the next big fantasy series to come out – now that the mania of Harry Potter and Twilight have come and gone, a Game of Thrones is in progress and the Hunger Games is just beginning – this is likely it. Very much mind candy, A Discovery of Witches is set in one woman’s world between Oxford, England many generations after the Salem Witch Trials.

You’ll meet witches, vampires and demons. Scenery is wonderfully described. The writing is well-done. And if you’re not in the mood for a good glass of wine at least halfway through the first book then you’re not reading it right.
