Calibre Save Template

I’ve recently started using the free program Calibre to manage my e-book collection, but the default formatting of how it saves books is not how I want mine saved at all. Calibre is a program that works for Nook, Kindle and iPad to manage your e-book library. You can use it to keep your library in sync with the files on your computer automatically, although I’m far too much of a control freak to let it update itself.

The default formatting for the way files are saved is:

{author_sort}/{title}/{title} - {authors}

Which saves your books as:

Folder for Author > Folder for Book Name > Book Name – Author Last, Author First
eg:     Jordan, Robert > Eye of the World, The > Eye of the World, The – Jordan, Robert

With several tweaks using trial and error of the code listed on the Calibre Template Language page, I was able to modify my template formatting like this:

{author_sort:.1}/{authors} - {series} {series_index:0>2s| - | - }{title}

Which saves your books instead as:

Folder for first letter of Author’s last name > Author Last, Author First – Book Series (if applicable) Book Series Number (if applicable) – Book Title
eg:     J > Jordan, Robert – Wheel of Time 01 – Eye of the World, The

This formatting will work if you don’t have a series at all, and will work to keep books in order up to two digits. If you want a preceding digit in the series order number (although I’ve never heard of a series with 100 books in it), you would change the “2″ in the above code to a “3″. The files on your device would look like the following image:

If you have enough books that you want each author to have their own folder, you would change the above formatting to the following:

{author_sort:.1}/{authors}/{authors} - {series} {series_index:0>2s| - | - }{title}

Which would save your books instead as:

Folder for first letter of Author’s last name > Folder for Author > Author Last, Author First – Book Series (if applicable) Book Series Number (if applicable) – Book Title
eg:     J > Jordan, Robert > Jordan, Robert – Wheel of Time 01 – Eye of the World, The

Calibre is a great program that allows you to organize your files, batch edit the metadata (like author, tags, series, etc), remove all versions of a specific format from your files, and convert your files to/from a number of ebook formats such as .epub, .mobi, .lit, and .pdf.

If this post becomes popular enough, I may start doing more tutorials on Calibre.
